Zmaj Jovina street

Because in a last few posts I mentioned Zmaj Jovina street, it is time to put a picture of the mentioned street. Street is named after Serbian poet,well known Jovan Jovanović Zmaj. Zmaj was born in Novi Sad, and he is famous for his children poems. On the end of the street is his monument. Zmaj Jovina street is main pedestrian zone, where are located a lot cafes and shops.

Inside Red Cow Pub

Red Cow pub is very popular place and it is located at Zmaj Jovina street. Pub is opened in 1997. in the oldest house in Novi Sad. In Red Cow you can find about 30 different brands of beer,and that is great if you like to try some beers that you cannot buy in shops. I love this place!

Krojač or in English Tailor was in the past very respectful profession. Nowdays,when machines replaced men in professions like Tailor,you can hardly find any shops with their services. I found one near center of town,at Šafarikova street.

Jovan Hadžić (1799.-1869.)was born in Sombor (city in the region called Bačka). He was writer,founder and first president of Matica Srpska. Hadžić was a very important person in the history of Serbian literature and spelling.

Sava Tekelija

Sava Tekelija (in Serbian- Сава Текелија) was the first Serbian doctor of law, the founder of Tekelijanum, and one of the presidents of Matica Srpska. He was born in Arad (Habsburg Monarchy,today Romania) and finished his studies in Pest. Monument is located in the front of Matica Spska building in the street with same name (Ulica Matice Srpske).

Trifkovićev trg

Trifkovićev trg (square in English) is located in the center of town. It is called square but it's not look like regular one with flowers,benches and fountains. I would call it Trifkovićev parking :) because lot's of parking spaces for cars. For some years the authorities plan to regulate the square,but other than small changes and cleaning nothing has changed.

Health center (or Dom zdravlja on Serbian) called Liman IV is located at Bulevar Cara Lazara. Soviet era building need some renovation. It is named after one part of Novi Sad (see map).

Inside TUS Supermarket,which is located at the Novo Naselje,there is Healthy land or in Serbian Zemlja zdravlja (you can see sign). I was impressed how nice that part with fruits and vegetables look. Very nice!

The name of Mary Church

The name of Mary Church(in Serbian-Crkva imena Marijinog) is located at square of freedom,center of Novi Sad. It is Roman Catholic Church named after Virgin Mary. Local people call it only 'Catholic Cathedral' or just 'Cathedral'. The Church was built by the foundation of old Roman Catholic Church and it was damaged during revolution in 1848. Catholics from Novi Sad decided to build a new church. New church was finished in 1894. by architect Georg Molnar. This church is the highest one in region of Bačka. Slovakian church

Evangelical church(also called Slovakian church or in Serbian Slovacka crkva) is located on the corner of Masarikova and Jovana Subotica street. Hungarian families led Slovaks to take care on their farms during 19.century. Slovaks were poor community and that's why their carried out a long preparation for the construction of the church. Church was finished in 1886. Now,Slovaks are 2.41% of total Novi Sad population. Slovaks in Serbia can learn at school on their own language and they are recognized as national minority.

Square of freedom is the main square in town. Town hall,Catholic Cathedral,McDonalds and other interesting buildings are located there. Also,there is statue of Svetozar Miletic(famous Serbian lawyer,politician and major of Novi Sad) another symbol of Novi Sad. Various events are held in this square(like New year's Eve,concerts,fairs,shows and more...)

Cold but sunny

This photo was made this morning on Petrovaradin fortress. I wanted to walk on fortress in this cold but sunny day. This is Dositeja Obradovica street. Lots of art galleries are located here. Street was named after Serbian famous author,philosopher,polygot and the first minister of education of Serbia.

Bulevar Evrope

This boulevard is the newest in Novi Sad. Fully renovated,it was called Suboticki bulevar after city Subotica located on the north,now given a new name-Boulevard of Europe. Serbia wants to enter European Union,so this boulevard is named in honour of that. Boulevard is full of new estate buldings,and you have there everything you need.

Sorry for posting wrong picture and wrong information,but that day I was in rush so I uploaded picture of Boulevard of Europe and write about another Boulevard(Bulevar Jovana Ducica). Because of this photo(I think it is good one) I changed information and left this photo.

Tempo is chain of shopping malls which can be found in all major cities in Serbia. This one is called Tempo express because is smaller than regular tempo,and it is like supermarket.

A little bit of old

Old car(I think it is old Skoda) and old house on neighborhood called Detelinara(street called Branka Bajica). It is only house that avoid selling in that part of street. There were a lot of those houses in it,but they were replaced with new estate buildings. On the window is adversment for selling eggs(10 cents 1 egg). :)

A lot of these lonely street markets you can find on Novi Sad neighborhoods. People try to find money for their family in this bad times. This man do not pay for stand in registered local market,so he saves some money. Some of these products are domestic(from his garden),and some are bought from big markets for fruits and vegetables where you stock on wholesale.

Because of my trip around the Europe I did not post any new photos,so yesterday I came back and took photo of neighbourhood called Novo Naselje(New Estate) which is near the place where I live. A lot of new buildings are located there. I will continue to post photos till next trip :)

I didn't know about Reformed Christian Church in city part called Telep,same part where is Saint Elisabeth Church. I was suprised when I saw it,and I found info that it was built in 1931. and the main language in church is Hungarian. And also there was a cute little cat who wanted to play or to have some meal :) .

Hotel Leopold I (Petrovaradin fortress)

Because I posted some infos about Petrovaradin and Fortress,I feel that I must inform you about accomodation in that part of town. Leopold I (or Hotel Tvrdjava) is luxurious hotel located on the fortress with around 50 rooms and 11 suites,some of which are named after the famous historical figures like: Maria Theresa Suite,Savoy Suite,Carl IV Suite and Joseph II Suite. Hotel has Restaurants&Bars,Congress&Board rooms and will have casino and lounge.

Old roofs of the old suburbium of Petrovaradin. Most of buildings need renovation,but nobody cares about it. Probably they like the way they look. Between trees you can see Serbian Orthodox Chapel of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.

Pijani sat (Drunken clock)

Tower with clock on Petrovaradin fortress is the most recognizable symbol of Novi Sad. The old clock was restored in 18th century with this one. Drunken clock is well know name for it,because when it is cold outside the clock is late,and rushing when it is heat outside. Other interesting thing is that Petrovaradin people must pay montly public utilities for watching at clock in 18th.century.
By the way,Petrovaradin is municipality which belongs to the city of Novi Sad. Historical place with lot of stories(soon more of it). Petrovaradin fortress is also symbol of Novi Sad,lot's of interesting buildings are located there. Exit festival,the biggest festival for this part of Europe,took place on fortress.

Saint Elizabeth Church

Saint Elizabeth is Hungarian Catholic Church in part of town called Telep. The church was built in 1930. Next to the church is construction area,where will be building that looks just like church. I don't know will it be building for living or something related to church.

Elektrovojvodina

Elektrovojvodina was found in July 1958,as a single company for distributing electricity in the teritory of Autonomus Province of Vojvodina. Now it is part of EPS(Serbian state electric company). Building of Elektrovojvodina is located on Bulevar oslobodjenja. Sign for new year(2010) is still there,don't know why,probably they are too lazy to put it down.

Žar ptica(in english Firebird) is monument in front of SPENS,dedicated to the victims of Vukovar city in Yugoslavian civil war. As you can see,it is interesting construction made of bullets and some other metal things.

Najlon pijaca

Najlon pijaca(or in english Nylon Market) is place in Novi Sad suburb. There you can buy different old things for a bargain price. Electronic stuff,records,things for car,dishes. T-shirts or some other clothes is about 0,5-3 euros. It is mostly second hand things,but if you search well you could find things that looks like brand new,or they are brand new. Like in all other markets you must come early early in the morning to find good things,because later all is sold out.

NIS

NIS building is located on Bulevar oslobodjenja next to shoping center Mercator. NIS is serbian oil industry and this is one of their headquarters. Big modern,for some people the most beautiful building in Novi Sad.

Bulevar oslobodjenja (Boulevard of liberation)

One of the thirteen boulevards in Novi Sad,starts from railway station and ends at the beggining of the bridge Freedom. Many important buildings are located on this boulevard.

Spens(sports and entertainment center)

Spens is located on Bulevar cara Lazara. Inside Spens there is a big sport complex with big and small hall for basketball,voleyball and other sports(major Novi Sad sport teams play there),swimming pool,bowling club .... Also concerts were held in halls. On the ground floor there is a lot of shops(for electronic,clothes...),cafes,clubs and restaurants.... It is,as they say in marketing of Spens centre,city in the city. Very important place for all people in Novi Sad. This photo was taken on the west side of it.

Mercator

Mercator is a Slovenian chain of shopping centers, built in 2007 and it is located on Bulevar oslobodjenja 102. Beside big market for food,drinks and all you need for home there is a lot of butiques and cafes(indoor or outdoor). If you come by car,you will be able to park it in big two floor garage. Prices for food and drinks in merkator market are bit higher than in other markets,but they allways offer you some things that you don't have to buy on other places. Oh,and they fixed a bus station which was demolished(Unlucky bus station).

There is about 30 new buses in town which JGSP(public company for transport) bought to make trip around Novi Sad more comfortable.

Panter restoraunt

Panter restoraunt is located on Bulevar Kralja Petra. You can find there very very tasty food,pizza is their speciality,and they doing delivery.Prices are not so high(family pizza is around 8 euros). For me,it is one of the best places to have good pizza.
